• Aemelia Secunda, Proprietress

  Aemelia is the unmarried daughter of tavern owner Titus Vibius, who is elderly and in frail health. Titus disapproves of Aemelia’s involvement but has little choice. His only other surviving relative is a child of eleven.

• Livia

  Livia is cousin to Aemelia. Married to Rufus Cascious, a merchant whose great fondness for the game and the grape forces her to work to support her many children.

• Kynthia

  Kynthia is a former slave of Senator Aulus Livianus. Upon the senator's death, Kynthia was freed. Her eccentrities, while undesirable in a slave, are welcomed by Aemelia. It's good for business.

• Boreas

  A simple, slow-witted mute who cleans the tavern. No one knows his real name or where he came from. He is very attentive to his duties.
